The poor health care people with disabilities and mental health get in the UK.

 •

It is shocking sad but not surprising to know there are only 4 in 10 people with learning disabilities in the UK according to Mencap see their 65th birthday. They say men die 20 years younger than women and women die 23 years younger than they should, very few with a disability are lucky enough to live the same ages as  those without disabilities and other problems.

The poor health care people with disabilities and mental health get in the UK.

I do not enjoy writing negatively, but I would be lying if I said I was not concerned about

the health care not only for people with a learning disability and mental health problems in the Uk.

I am not saying the Uk is the country that has poor health.

This also makes me concerned for everyone lives their well

everyone who was born and bred there without being racist and I was born there myself.

The UK government needs to wake up and spend money on what is important, which is health care.

Just because people with learning disability and mental problems need support with their lives,

that does not mean the government should their live do not mean anything,

it has always been the same from my experience and it seems to get worse every day.

A young person’s life with disability and mental health problems are as important and

matter as much as people without disabilities and mental health problems.

They have rights to live their lives with the right

support as much as those without disabilities and mental health.

Health care has always been poor in the Uk, and it needs to change for the better.

According to Mencap, there are 1 -4 health professionals not trained in

learning disability and probably not trained in mental health either.

The government needs to pay people to learn about disability and mental health

to train health professionals in learning disability and mental health. Please read this website to see why this is so important, thank you. https://www.mencap.org.uk/sites/default/files/2018-07/2017.005.01%20Campaign%20report%20digital.pdf

What is mental health and mental illness?

When life is good for us a lot and quite often more so than when it is bad, that is good mental health. Good Mental health help us make good choices in our lives such as eating healthy exercise and may help us get good sleep. Good times could be that they have a lot of friends, in a happy relationship, having a good career for example. If that stops and changes for any reason, it’s always the case but depending on the person and many other things, it may affect but also may depend how badly it does affect them.

However,’ this may vary if we disabilities and mental illness. When life is not good most people may eat, drink etc too much, face eating disorders, putting or losing too much weight, addictions, such as smoking, drugs etc, have money problems, lose their job, home and more.

When life goes bad for us a lot and often, that is concern for mental ill – health. However,’ Mental illness know as mental ill health can affect different people different ways, where for most people can feel negative without a reason as well as with, it is hard for them to understand why let alone anyone else. This is all to do with how we may feel inside, in our mood etc.

Plus, most disabilities, health problems and more can cause sleeping problems, where most people may struggle get to sleep when they probably should and many other reasons too, this may not make them feel good the day ahead.

However,’ these days compared to the past there are some medications, treatments and more, it is hard to know for sure because there are so but some may cause side – affects.

Not everyone sadly is good at opening or and some may not want to, they may feel how their life is, is no one else’s business, they may worry about putting on others, they feel they are only certain people they can talk to, some may feel comfortable talking to those they know others those they don’t know strange as it may sound, what does make sense is that there are people who feel better if they talk to those who they can trust.

It used to be when I was young that girls, women than men, boys were better at opening than boys and men. In many ways maybe that is still the but in others that is starting to may be change and improve. Even before I was a teenager, I heard people say boys and men do not cry, even though I do not ever saw a male cry unless he was a baby, I still believed it was possible for anyone to cry. I just thought males cried in private, which may have been the case. Looking back on that now, I think I believe society back then did not want either of us to be open really, attitudes back then was just get on with life.

Thinking about without saying life was tough on women and girls than it was on men or the other way round for example; they made it look like boys; men were the stronger ones and girls; women were the weak ones. Yet when I was a kid I could not make it out. I had some adult say boys’ men are not mentally strong but physically, whereas girls, women are not physically strong but mentally. Where females can get emotions out more so than males. Those attitudes looking back may have got males misunderstood to have no feelings etc and it was not Manley for males to cry in front of people, which I did not then, and I do not now think that was fair. I think we all have as much right as one another but I also think it is up to individuals whether they want to open up or not but to bear in mind nothing goes away or gets better if you do not open up to someone. What are your thoughts?

It is too easy to think of the world as black and white, which is not the case.

I will be honest to say that Mental illness is serious and be dangerous if not taken seriously but if take care of in the right care, support and person themselves, I would be wrong to say that.

a person’s life would be perfect, but it can be manageable.

The reason I say this is because I have come across some people to think of people who face mental illness to think of them never happy, never positive.

Always sad always negative, which is not the case. They go through many downtimes but that is not or not necessary all the time. We all go through time we feel down at times but when it happens more than necessary there is a concern.

There is good mental health and bad mental health. For most of us this can vary and go through stages. No one or should I say most of us dose not want to make others unhappy, but no one want, or should I say most of us do not want to think of someone suffering alone either, which is a hard line to draw.

It is very easy to take feelings for granite, I have just said about it being easy to think of people facing illness as never feeling good about oneself but also it is too easy, for example think of someone you see always laughing, joking etc. as if they are never unhappy but that is not necessarily true, which is another hard line to draw.

In fact, I guess most people who appear to be mostly happy struggle to show the opposite to others or only to those who may feel comfortable doing so, if at all.

For example; famous comics on tv etc. Believe it or not don’t get me wrong I say this but of course I believe a lot those who have their emotions I do believe them to be struggling but also a lot of those who do not. Either way does not give us the right to judge because everyone has different ways of dealing with whatever they may be facing.

Next up, difference the same if any between mental health and mental illness.

These two differences I

thinks are rather simple least I think so. we cannot be happy all the time and we can’t be sad all the time.https://www.heretohelp.bc.ca/q-and-a/whats-the-difference-between-mental-health-and-mental-illness

Don’t get me wrong it doesn’t mean we all face Mental illness, but we all go through length of time of spells of happiness and sadness, meaning mental health is positive for us if or when we have a spell happiness for a certain length, if or and when a spell of sadness for a certain length of time.

It is not always the case that something is bothering us; in some of us, we can go through spells of feeling negative for no reason, whichever way should not be judged.

It all comes down to how we think,

feel, behave, react and even interact.

 etc. to life around us.

When it comes to reasons why we think,

 feel, behave, react, interact etc.,

if it is negative, there is something.

that is bothering us, like money problems,

full outs, break ups with those know,

death of those we know, bullying,

abuse and more.

Not saying everyone does this but

for even those us who do,

are not saying it is right but

when in moment of a crisis,

it is easy for most of us to be.

driven to make the wrong choice.

like drinking a lot, smoking a lot, drugs etc.

If you are concerned something maybe

bothering someone

Never tell someone to stop or

start doing something but tell them.

what is likely to happen if?

they do or don’t do what they

decide to door and don’t do,

it is down to them to decide.

However,’ don’t get me wrong,

it is fine to let them know you.

are for them if they wish to talk.

but let the choice be theirs

and hopefully they will do the

 same for you.

We are all human we are right all the

time and we are not wrong all the time either.

They may talk to you today, tomorrow,

next week, next year or not at all,

whichever they know you have offered.

They may even talk to someone else.

but please do not question if they are talking.

someone else unless you one another

 really well you

know they do not mind you asking that,

or even though it will be a good thing if they,

if they wish to tell you that is their choice,

if it is your choice. However,’

it is concerning for those who.

don’t or struggle to open but

at the same time. Your respect

 their wishes and privacy,

if they decide to open to you,

they will let you but if you need.

raise health, safety and concern.

only tell those are trained and

qualified to deal with and let the

people know why you need to raise.

that concerns where or who and who.

If they haven’t come to you for a

chat if something is bothering them,

please do not take it personally,

some things maybe private to them,

they may be afraid of your reaction.

even though you know you wouldn’t.

judge them, that may be hard for

them to know unless you know.

 each other well, respect

their privacy, not a word to anyone

 unless you’re concerned about them

health and safety, even then only

tell if they feel they can’t to those.

work for services etc. who can help,

Maybe families etc., only if the

 person wants you to anymore.

else and only tell who they

 allow you to.

Before we look at types of support let’s

look at types of mental illnesses.

you may be able to learn about Anxiety,

Depression, Bipolar which is a type of depression.

, Borderline Personality,

schizophrenia,

Support and treatment.

For example; cognitive behavioral therapy, art, creative therapy, talking therapy counseling, medication etc.

coping skills such as hobbies, interests, careers.

Schizoaffective.  https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/

Just to get one thing straight, as confusing as it may sound. A Counselling qualification may mean all sorts of things. Not necessarily a professional Counsellor. It may mean Counselor a school, Hospital etc. Where you may listen to people one to one who may have faced such emotional issues as bullying, abuse, death of someone they know, an animal and more issues.

Most Counselling qualifications do necessary help you to completely solve the whole problem, but you may solve the basic of the problem or and them enough help to a point the problem may not increase. However,’ this may vary depending on the person, the problem they are facing and the ex-scream of the problem. It may be something you may be able to solve, or you may need to sign post them elsewhere. It also depends on little or how much the person may be able to help themselves if at all.  The reason I mention this is, I have done two counselling courses one I failed the other I passed. On the course I failed, one student asked the tutor if he will be a professional when he has done the course, she said no. He said “I don’t understand, how is that? She said it just trained you to help you help with the basics of the client’s problem, depending on the person and problem. https://www.mencap.org.uk/easyread/big-learning-disability-survey-findings-mental-health

It is important to understand the difference between learning disabilities and mental health.

Most people do not understand the difference between learning disabilities and mental health.

There is always times everyone does not feel themselves, but it is a case of how long it lasts and how often.

It is due to concern whether it lasts longer than necessary.

Mental health does not connect to Learning disabilities because people

without disabilities can also face mental illness.

However,’ it is true say a lot of people who face learning disabilities face Mental – ill health too,

more so than those without learning disabilities.

The reason why this could be confusing is because

life around people could affect us through our lives.

For example; if we see our family, our parents, full out,

part, divorce etc, whether it has happened very early childhood whenever it is.

That does not necessarily make our parent or

family members the ones to blame because some

if not, most relationships are not meant to be

but when we are children that is hard to

understand and still can for most of us have

an effect on ourselves and our relationships,

even though most may understand why our

parents may have broken up when we were children.

Having learning disabilities does not

make a person worse off than someone

without a learning disability who has

faced their parents etc break up.

People with learning disability may

just take longer to understand

than those without.

That is just an example,

but it could be any situation,

 where it affects Mental health

 emotional well-being.

Reasons why this could be for example.

For example; most people with Autism,

melt downs, and ADHD face high levels of Anxiety.

 Poor health, poor health care,

 vulnerability, needing more support,

even too much support, being misunderstood,

impact on attitudes people may have

 on people with learning disabilities,

if people disabilities are not feeling equal to other people,

people with disabilities feel frustrated when they are struggling

to do everyday tasks and those who are trying to do

the things people can do themselves, which may make them feel anxious.https://www.mencap.org.uk/learning-disability-explained/research-and-statistics/health/mental-health

Learning disability and Mental health Statists 2025

Statistics of people face learning disabilities and mental health.

Just let you know these numbers may not be completely correct,

it is just a rough number of people

who are facing learning disabilities and mental health problems etc.

In the USA, there are at least 8 percent of people

facing learning disabilities. Roughly 20 percent of

them facing Attention disorders according to my research.

There are about four million of them under

the age of 18 who face a learning disability.

There are about 48 percent of people with

 a learning disability in employment.

Research says that learning disabilities

are more common in boys than girls.

There may be 40 percent of people who

may have a learning disability of some sort.

Dyslexia and ADHD affects roughly 6 percent

to 10 percent of young people.

In the UK, there are roughly 349,000 children from 0 to 7

years facing disabilities and special education needs.

That is probably higher than it was when I was a child

with special educational needs, yet I went to special schools in the UK.

The UK probably have roughly 2.16 people with learning disabilities

altogether whereas, says the USA has 15 percent of their people.

If this is the case, there is not much difference in the numbers between the Uk, and USA.

I was looking on the Mencap website, it is no surprise to find that the health care

system for those with disabilities and mental health is completely shocking or is it?

I am yet to research the USA for health care for

people with disabilities and mental health.

There are roughly 5 to 15 percent of children were

struggling with learning disabilities in the USA.

About 22.8 percent of adults faced mental illness in 2021.

4.6 percent of adults faced mental distress.

10 percent of children between 3 and 17 may be undiagnosed

with such mental illness as Anxiety and Depression in the USA.

Mental illness is probably more so, in people all ages

in people who face learning disabilities, than those who do not.

1 in 5 face mental illness.

1 in 20 elderly people face mental illness.

1 in 6 young people face health disorders.

50 percent have lifetime mental illness.

Suicide seems to be sad between say children as young as 10 to 14, maybe longer and older

which is shocking but not surprising my mind as I

would say the hardest part my life was when I was those ages.

They normally face emotional problems such as school bullying, abuse, exam stress,

if parents do not get on, parents parting, divorcing etc.

4.6 adults have reported mental distress driving them

to smoke, maybe drink heavy, addictions etc in the USA, probably all ages.

This number is probably high but may not be as high as the UK.

These people, or most of them may face sleeping disorders,

 Anxiety, Depression, Obesity and more.

The Uk faces roughly 1.5 people with learning disabilities.

1 in 4 facing mental health problems.

Most people may be overlooked and undiagnosed.

There is roughly about 2’050 people with Autism and learning in the UK,

who are patients in mental health hospitals in England.

Therefore’ wonder whether if the reasons are

due to mental health problems or other reasons or both.

When I worked for Mencap, it was said that they were closing a lo

of long, short stay hospitals, residual homes etc down

and encouraging people with learning disabilities to live

out in the community to be supported by family or services.

Now in 2025, the USA has at least 5 to 15 percent children struggling with a learning disability.

About 22.8 percent adult s were struggling with mental illness in 2021,

4.6 percent adults are struggling with mental distress,

10 percent of children aged 3 to 17 are diagnosed with Anxiety.

Learning disabilities do not really connect to mental health.

However,’ at least most people all ages who face learning disabilities face mental illnesses as well.

At least 4 percent of people are diagnosed with depression.

At least 1 in 5 under senior age face mental illnesses.

At least 1 in 20 seniors face mental illness.

At least 1 in 6 people face mental health disorders.

At least 50 percent of people have life – time mental illnesses.

Sadly, most children as young as 10 to 14 face suicide.

26 percent of Americans 18 and over face mental disorders.

In the UK, roughly about 1 in 5 people with a learning disability according to Mencap. At least 25 to 40 percent of these people face mental health problems. Most may be overlooked and undiagnosed.

There are about 2,050 of people with Autism not in independent living, many are in short or and long stay hospitals, Inpatient Mental Health hospitals in England. When I worked for Mencap, the government promised that most if not all residual care, hospitals, place like that would be closed and people with disabilities and other problems would be encouraged to live out in the community with the right support.

How much or how little or not at all, has did happened since 2007 to 2011 to 2025?

https://www.mencap.org.uk/about-ld?gclid=CjwKEAjw1Iq6BRDY_tK-9OjdmBESJABlzoY7qA1zUG7gdV00JMBxMWmecoqorTcDHEyhjOix1uA4ehoCAkvw_wcB

There are at least 15 percent of people who are students worldwide who have learning disabilities.

Such learning education difficulties as Dyscalculia and Dyslexia affects about 10 percent people worldwide, 1.7 percent of people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is 2 to 10 percent common among young people worldwide struggling reading, writing, math, etc including UK and USA. ttps://www.mencap.org.uk/learning-disability-explained/research-and-statistics/health/mental-health

What is Spina Bifida?

Spina Bifida normally happens before or during birth.

SB Spina Bifida is when the backbone is split

into two that affects the Spinal cord,

 which happens in early pregnancy.

It normally happens in the Baby’s lower back.

It might rarely happen in the middle of the neck and the back.

There are three types of Spina Bifida,

 Occulta, meningocele,

 and myelomeningocele.

It can be a very serious condition it is not always as there may be

very mild forms of the condition.

Different people have different forms and types.

It is along the spine if the neural tube does not close.

The condition may vary from mild to service.

The person will probably need care and treatment more than support.

There are roughly 2’875 Spina Bifida births in the USA.

Here is more to learn. About Spina Bifida | Spina Bifida | CDC  Spina bifida - NHS

It is if the spine does not fully develop.

How it affects people with Spina Bifida may depends on the type of Spina Biffa, how damage of the spine is,

Whether they can walk, stand up, both or neither; how mild, minor or major etc.

Some may not have any movement.

Some people may need a lot of personal care such as washing,

 bathing, feeding, toileting and more

as it may have an effect on some people’s bladder or and bowls.

Some people may have little speech, may not be able to talk, others do.

It is a condition that does not affect everyone who has it the same.

Therefore, even some families need more support than others.

For example; I knew a lady years ago who had major Spina Bifida,

she could not move at all, but she came from a very big family,

that is not aways the way.

She was the youngest of twelve children, her Mum was elderly

and her Dad had died but her brothers and sisters chipped into together.

This site should tell you about different types of Spina Bifida Spina bifida - NHS

Meningocele is the minor type of SB, where there is a sack of fluid

outside the opening of the back.

The sack does not contain any part of the Spinal cord.

The reason for this is because there is very little nerve damage.

Therefore’ How does Meningocele affect the person’s life?

Meningocele can lead to infections and mobility problems,

where the person will need treatment and care.

They may face weakness to the legs,

may have bowl and bladder problems.

They may need Physical therapy to improve the mobility problems,

possibly medication to try and treat the bladder and bowl problems.

Spina Bifida occulta is a mild type of SB.

There may not be any disabilities, but it is a very hidden condition,

where the problems may show later in the person’s life.

There is no opening to the spine

There is no damage to the Spinal cord.

Therefore’ how does it affects the person’s life?

No one knows what causes this type of SB

because the symptoms are not shown.

There is a gap in the spine, it is normally covered in skin,

 with the spinal cord,

it can vary to very few problems even no problems.

Potential complication is very rare.

Myelomeningocele is the most serious type of SB,
where it causes damage to the muscles,
where the person is not able to walk at all or control their muscles.
This is because there is weakness and paralysis in their lower limbs.
In this type of SB, the part of the spinal cord may be pushed
out with meninges opening the form of the spine
to form the sac on the baby’s back.
The spinal cord and nearby nerves may get damaged,
it may cause paralysis, when the person does not feel they
can move at all because every part of the body is completely stiff,
which may cause them lifetime infections.
Babies may need surgery before or after birth
within the first few days of life.
The spinal cord may be visible outside the body at birth.
The neural may fail to close, the tissue is exposed
to the baby’s back and it will look like a sticky sac.
It may start with opening and closing,
in the first weeks of pregnancy.
 it may keep growing and folding;
forming the brain and spinal cord.
If the tube fails to close as it should,
the muscles and nerves should be working together
to store and void the urine from the body.
It may affect the bladder muscles,
 where it may not work.
Where some conditions may cause the
 opposite, where they may not
give people time to get to the bathroom.
People with SB may face neurogenic bladder problems
where their bladder does not fill up as they should.
This called dedusted sphincter dyssynergia (DSD).
It is when the detrusor muscle and the Urethral
Sphincters does not work together.
I may not have fully understood what I have been
researching but I have understood most.

Williams Syndrome

Again, people who face the condition have a piece of missing information in the chromosome.

No one knows why this happens and again it is a rare condition,

happens to at least 1 in 18 thousand people in the UK.

It is not passed on by parents etc, plus it is a learning disability.

Everyone who faces the condition, one person faces it differently to the other.

Children maybe slow at holding things.

Williams Syndrome like Down Syndrome,

it is more to do with a person’s looks.

For e.g.; a wide mouth, high round cheeks, gaps between their teeth.

People with Williams Syndrome talk a lot but they are very friendly.

As they get older they have problems with health and mental health.

It can be hard to know if someone has the condition or not

, it may be noticed by a doctor.

The person may have to have a blood test.

The person may have been born low weight.

They may grower slower to other children.

They may be unwell a lot.

They may have feeding and bowl difficulties.

They may find it hard to sleep.

Support and treatment may be physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

What is SYNGAP1?

 What is SYNGAP1?

This is another condition when the person’s gene changes.

SYNGAP1 is one of those rare conditions.

No one knows why this happens and why the gene changes.

It is the same as Global development where it slows down people’s

basic skills like babies and children.

For e.g.; walking, talking, holding objects and maybe more.

Why is it a different name? There must be something different for a different

condition to have roughly the same signs as another condition.

It affects how people feel, how they behave, and the way they are with people.

Therefore, it may affect their mental health, so we need to find out how.

Not many people will need a lot of support because of a learning disability

but they may find it hard to listen to people for a long time,

they may find it hard to do things for a long time,

some people may do things without thinking about it,

some may hit themselves or and hit others so please protect all safety,

they also may need mental health support but

this may not affect everyone who faces the condition that way.

They may face challenging behavior.

The condition may affect the muscles for walking, talking etc.

Some people may face Epilepsy.

Some may face Autism.

Some may struggle with eye contact, bright lights,

they may do the same thing a lot,

they may struggle with nose, everyday loud sounds,

 they may flap,

 bite themselves such as hands,

 nails and arms a lot.

Most people may not feel pain until it is very bad.

They may look shocked and surprised even at times you may not except them to be.

Some people may have big eyebrows.

Some people may have big gabs between their eyes.

It can be hard to find out if your child

has this condition or anyone you know come across,

 etc.

If you are concerned that you or someone is your life is showing signs of

this condition or any of the conditions I am writing about please try to look for support or other problems,

if it is someone and not you please talk to them about it first or someone in their care etc.

even if you may be concerned if you have the condition.

Talk to a doctor, try to get a blood test, if it is someone not you

and you are not supporting them, speak to

the person who is if you feel the person

they don’t understand you.

Children may not sit alone,

they may not walk quickly,

they may not talk quickly or not at all.

Some people may face eating and or feeding difficulties.

They may need to eat through a tube to their stomach.

With the right support they may be able to lead a happy life. https://syngapuk.org/

Thhttps://geneticalliance.org.uk/e condition may affect their muscles, moving round etc. https://curesyngap1.org/

What is global developmental delay?

  What is global developmental delay?

Global Developmental Delay may slow down,

peoples eye contact looking at people,

moving around,

 learning to walk,

picking up, holding objects,

learning to talk etc.

They may face learning disabilities such as Down Syndrome and Cereal Palsy.

Some children may face Global developmental for a short time.

Some people may need extra support for a long time.

It may be a learning disability.

Different children may start doing things at different ages. https://geneticalliance.org.uk/  Brainwave, Tree Of Hope

What is challenging behavior?

Challenging behavior is more of a

Mental health problem than a learning disability.

Although it may come with such conditions as ADHD, Anger, Autism,

Anxiety because they link to peoples’ thoughts,

emotions, feelings, to the way people behave, etc.

There is no excuse for negative behavior,

but the problems people face don’t help either.

For example; a person with Autism may

be upset and anxious by unexcepted changes.

Some people may be frustrated,

upset and Anxious when they struggle to do things.

These behaviors could be hitting, shouting,

throwing things, getting angry with themselves or others.

They may be a safety risk to themselves or others.

Challenging behavior can make it very hard for

a person to get on with, make friends etc.

Autism is one of the most common disabilities that affect people’s

relationships with other people, causing a lot of Anxiety.

Not all is due to the disability, but it does not help the person either

because the person has positive behavior as well as negative behavior.

This does not make the person feel good about themselves,

they may feel guilty etc, which does not make things all right either.

What should you do if your child, family member, or someone you know

or came across etc is facing Challenging behavior?

May be you know or come across someone who is looking for help.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy is a condition that affects the arms and legs.

It affects how people sit, walk, stand, move etc

Some people may not be able to do one, some of those or neither.

It normally affects the brain.

It mostly happens during or any time after birth.

If they are unwell, they may not have enough oxygen going round the brain.

Everyone who faces the condition may face it difficulty.

Some people may have epilepsy, others may find it hard to talk.

Cerebral Palsy itself is not a learning disability but

some people may have a learning disability with it.

When a child is born, doctors normally find out

whether or not they have Cerebral Palsy.

Physiotherapy may be helpful for people with Cerebral Palsy. Home | Cerebral Palsy Research Network

What is Angelman Syndrome.

Angelman Syndrome affects the brain and the body.

People find it hard to walk and talk.

They have lots of energy and they find it hard to concentrate and sleep.

The condition may improve as they get older.

Most of them have a learning disability.

They can live long healthy lives.

They learn new skills and find different ways to communicate.

It is caused by genes, a gene that is not working.

It is a lifetime condition.

There is no cure but there is support.

The person may have seizure and may struggle to communicate.

You may communicate with them by using Makaton and other communication aids.

They may need physio for exercise and treatments.

Inform

doctor if you, anyone you know or

come across has Angelman Syndrome. Here is more information https://www.angelmanuk.org/

What is DiGeorge Syndrome?

DiGeorge Syndrome affects peoples’ learning as well as being a learning disability.

as most if not all learning disabilities do. It mostly affects people physically.

People may not learn at the same time as those around them.

It is a genetic condition that starts from birth.

The cause is a missing DNA,

which makes up peoples’ missing coding.

In some cases, it is 10 percent inherited from a

parent who has DiGeorge Syndrome,

which may come from the egg or the sperm.

Each person who faces the condition faces it difficulty.

It is not easy to know how seriously,

people face the condition facing it.

Some children become unwell where

some may pull through others may not.

Other people may go through life not

knowing they have the condition.

Adults facing this condition tend to live an independent life. DiGeorge Syndrome (DGS) Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment | AAAAI

Learning Disability vs Learning Difficulty vs Learning Disorder - The Debate Continues - Harley Therapy™ Blog

The difference between a learning disability and learning difficulty.

A disability is a condition that affects the brain and body,

which is impairment which affects most things do,

the difficulties you face depends on the disabilities you face.

There are many disabilities that cause difficulties such as for e.g.;

vision difficulties in sight or not seeing at all, blindness etc,

movement, thinking, remembering, hearing, mental health and social relationships.

It is natural to get confused with a learning disability and a learning difficulty because they both seem the same but really very different to one another in most ways.

Learning disability do not have the general intellects that learning difficulties have but it is possible to have both. Not everyone has both.  Learning disabilities reduce the intellectual ability and difficulty of what people face by affecting things people may do and need help with. Such as household tasks, education, work, social lives and more.

What is a learning disability?

It can affect lives in huge different ways

such as household skills, shopping, money,

health, education, work, social lives, friendships, relationships, family and more.

It is easy to get confused with disability,

disability, difficulties and poor mental health.

 Mental illnesses.

People with disabilities can face poor

 mental health but don’t necessarily

need disabilities to face poor mental health,

 the same either way round.

It is not always necessary that you

 face disabilities, difficulties or special

needs to face poor mental health.

As for the difference between learning

 disability and difficulty,

 learning difficulties does not affect

 intellects as learning disabilities do.

As I said, this dish is difficult.

Special needs means needing support for difficulties.

Abilities mean strengths.

The difficulties slow us down. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/learning-disabilities/

Saying this is the case with everyone.

 Attitudes have been getting.

better in the last so many years

but we still have a long way to go.

People who are not disabled were

viewed as normal but what normal.

A difficulty is what a person may struggle with whether it is talking,

The differences between dyscalculia and dysgraphia, is there anything the same one another?

Dyscalculia is a mathematical learning difficulty like Dyslexia but  with numbers, which cause people who face it a lot of Anxiety. They call it math Anxiety.

I used my fingers, calculator, cubes when I was a child etc., then most of my math were wrong answers. But Again, back then I didn’t know what the problem was neither did others who knew me but what we did know, we didn’t understand why I couldn’t learn like other people.

I know I wasn’t the only one struggling with this, but I didn’t realize that at the time, I thought I was different to everyone and without trying to play on sympathy and attention, I felt as life wasn’t living at times but as I am learning what my problems are, I am learning to accept the support I need, I don’t feel like the stupid one anymore.

I have learned over the years now I am just slower than other people and I am not alone as I thought I was.

Dysgraphia is a handwriting and spelling learning difficulty where people struggle to write neat, struggle to spell, with grammar, punction and more. Without lines and margins on the page, their writing may be all over the place.

Difference between Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

I bet you wonder what I am talking about,

well writing about when I call the title difference between,

I bet you wonder what I mean.

That is very understandable you may be thinking.

What does she mean by The difference and the same?

Well, you may have noticed I have written about some disabilities, difficulties, conditions etc.,

similar if different from one another so this is what I am going to cover in this chapter.

Let me start with the differences and same between and in Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

Research says that Dyslexia used to be a learning

difficulty that causes people to struggle reading,

writing, and spelling but that will always be the case.

I guess nothing has changed there because.

I think I have had that all my life, and I am sure I am not alone.

However,’ as I said earlier that.

does not mean the person cannot read at all,

it is just difficulties along the way. Even those who

can’t read and write think as much as those who can read and write,

they have knowledge and things.

to say and stories to tell. We should not judge a book by its cover.

To be truthful I am uncertain whether I have Dyslexia as well as Dyspraxia even I

was Diagnosed twice for Dyslexia, maybe three times but never for Dyspraxia, even those.

I have struggled with taking in what I have read, struggling with reading certain words.

and spelling certain words; motor skills meaning physical skills

so, I guess I do have both but whether

or professionals etc. see it that way, I don’t know.

By own experience I cannot help but

sum up what it may be like for others as well.

I’m not sure whether it is possible to have Dyslexia and Dyspraxia,

or you can just have one or the other. I guess so because I think.

I have always had both. You may think if I have been diagnosed for

Dyslexia three times and it came up that I am,

that I must and yes I believe I must be.

The reason I said I am uncertain is because Dyslexia and Dyspraxia

are so similar as far as reading and writing is concerned.

If you have both it can be hard to tell which reading,

writing etc., which is dyslexia which is dyspraxia.

Going back to forty to 50 odd years

ago when I was in school,

Say I was seven to eight years old.

I had forgotten what the teacher had said.

It was a handwriting lesson.

The teacher told us to miss a line between

the date and title,

then miss a line the title before we continued writing.

Naughty me forget all that as far

 as the teacher was concerned.

All because of that as she was looking at my work,

she slapped the ruler across the back of my legs.

This was in a special school.

Going by that experience I do not have

any hard feelings for what she did,

that was the generation at the time.

Despite that going by today’s standards,

she should not be allowed to do

what she did but maybe she did because.

she had to at the time because no

one really understood disabilities, difficulties etc.

Then again that could have been

anyone who forgotten to do as she said,

it so happened I was the child who forgot.

Thinking about it now, I will be honest to say

I have memory whether it was intentional or not

But I know it was one of the experiences

that taught me right from wrong,

some people may see is as abuse may

 be it was today.

Me myself I am not sure what to see as,

as was the norm in those days.

Children back then never really knew

if they were in the right or wrong.

If we said back then sorry I forgotten to miss a line for example.

Adults would not see it that was,

and we would accept we were in the wrong,

whether it was on purpose or not.

That was all we knew.

Disabilities and other problems are no excuses for

behaviors but they do not help behaviors.

I guess there may be most people who

it may be as if it was abuse in today’s world.

I will be honest to say I don’t think in the way

I see it now in the she must have seen.

Her intentions were punishing me to remember next.

time to miss the lines when I was told to, not abuse me.

 However,’ I do agree,

there are worse things I could do very well

have done to deserve the punishment.

I had, not that I was perfect

 child because no one is.

I do not blame her because she was

following the system at the time,

which in most things weren’t necessarily

unfair but there were worse things to be punished for,

which back then were minor and major

r things no one got away with overall.

Before I change the subject, I may be wrong this

but maybe the easiest way to

tell the difference between Dyslexia and Dyspraxia,

is the motor skills problems being.

Dyspraxia and the reading and writing problem

 but not necessarily,

you would think it would be

the case but not sure it is as

simple as that Sorry this is confusing isn’t it?

However, would adding Dyspraxia can cause the problem with gripping,

incudes gripping pens and pencils for example. When I was in school I did not know

I had Dyspraxia and neither did anyone else. However,’ everyone knew me,

or most people and I knew what was then clumsy, that I broke things etc.

Back relations from others was like punishment,

which like to me at the time,

but it was very understandable in one way.

When I used to write and I even the same today example, without

meaning to I press too hard on the paper.

Teachers always wondered why I was sharpening.

pencils at the desk every five minutes lol, as easily broke them without meaning to.

May you have worked the same and different between the two learning?

difficulties that sound the same but different, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia,

maybe I have explained some notes, look and see if a link written by someone else helps.

The differences between dyscalculia and dysgraphia, is there anything the same one another?

Dyscalculia is a mathematical learning difficulty like Dyslexia but causes a lot more Anxiety,

which I face myself. where for me I cannot really work out math in my head.

I used my fingers, calculator, cubes when I was a child etc.,

then most of my math were wrong answers. But Again, back then I didn’t know.

what the problem was neither did others who knew me but what we did know,

What is (Dyspraxia Developmental Co – ordination) (DDCD)

Dyspraxia affects the body and the brain but

really it affects the body mostly, it is a very hidden disorder.

Affecting co -ordination, fine motor skills, balance, sport, driving and more.

Most people who face the disorder look to those who don’t them and never

seen as if they do not have problems physically but they do.

If you spend a lot of time with these people you will see the difficulties they face.

I do not know when it starts for other people but for me

it started lack of oxygen to the brain at birth, where for

50 odd years and it will be for the rest of my life,

affect the left hand side of the brain like a stroke.

I would not know if some if not most people get on the right side of the brain.

In my early years, they called it a mild brain jury or damage

but I have always known by feel that the left – side

of my brain affects the physical difficulties I face.

Although it never goes away, it is not all negative,

as I have found I overcame some things over the years.

There is help and support, but my Mum and family weren’t aware of starting

with such support and treatment as Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy.

To start with none of us knew the name of the disorder.

I was in my 30s until we knew the name.

By feel I knew what was causing it, but I knew for a long time how to explain it.

Ben’s Mum is concerned because only she knows his struggles. Ben worries in case people think he is stupid if he asks others for help a lot. A lot of people are offering support in areas he can cope with rather than cannot, which what is concerns his Mum.

Ben can read and write but he does not remember or understand what he’s read, he needs support aids, easy read, accessible information, clear for all.

He has Autism as well.

What sort of help does Ben need? What I have written in the text is just examples of support, maybe you can research online, the library etc.

What is concerning Ben’s Mum and why?

Therefore, you may be wondering, what does Dyspraxia have to do with Saliva gland cancer? That is understandable. To be honest nothing really, do not face Dyspraxia to face Saliva glad cancer. However,’ me and family are not sure how long I had the lump before my Mum discovered it at the age of seven, but I have always struggled with my month eating.

swallowing etc. anyway with my month and tongue, whereas the lump was inside my throat but all the same they all add up and make you wonder whether not both problems started during while I was born. Therefore, I am not only speaking for me but for others who may have faced the same if not similar.

Due to the amount of difficulties people face with Dyspraxia, it causes us a huge amount of Anxiety and Depression, which we can get frustrated with what we do struggle, which were of right tools, aids, support etc. needs to be around. This could also mean mental health support and for people all ages needing to know why they struggle. Those who do not know they face Dyspraxia, funding needs to go into assessments, Diagnosis’s and the support they do need.

Also training and qualifying, those who want to be physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist, which is what could have done from childhood and other people who have always faced Dyspraxia and other conditions etc. I just hope today’s generation and others to come to get better support.

On the positive side people with Dyspraxia can be creative in some areas of IT but not others. Saying that I have found that there have not been many IT courses. Mind you the Covid lockdown did not help as everything was limited.

I can only speak for myself and my strengths, which is power point, word processing, creative writing, drawing, painting etc., which are likely to be different for different people.

Dyspraxia needs to be taken very seriously.

as it is a physical hidden learning difficulty

 that is not noticeable,

which is why it is hard?

condition to understand.

It is not illness or disease,

it is a long-life condition that affects.

people’s lives mentally as well

physically.

It can be linked to Autism.

However,’

with the lifetime conditions being

such a hidden learning difficulty,

it is understandable why it can be hard.

for others to take seriously.

Where people with Dyspraxia

 can be misunderstood as

clumsy, spill Ing something

 on purpose etc.;

for example, but all the same people with

Dyspraxia need to be understood.

No one can really tell unless they spend a

lot of time with the person, unless they know.

them well like family etc.

Dyspraxia is caused by a brain injury or a

stroke, in fact it is like a stroke where.

one side of the body and brain is weaker that the other.

In my case it is my left hand side but

some may be affected on their right hand side.

It can slow people down physical skills.

such as sewing, sport, cooking, housework,

even shopping, carrying, lifting, cleaning teeth,

tying shoes laces and more.

It may affect such skills as road sense, driving, and riding a bike.

Coordinate, grip, etc.

With drinks for example; they be able to only do one thing at a time, which may slow them done.

Such as only carrying one drink at a time because the one side of the body and brain may be stronger than the other, depending which side of the brain is damaged. With me, it is the left hand side of the brain, which affects the left hand side of my body mostly.

Support and treatment a person really needs from as soon as it is aware they face dyspraxia, the younger they are the better. Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy, maybe also muscle exercises etc. to try to make them stronger.

Mentally it affects reading and writing in

the same way as Dyslexia where other

conditions link such Dyscalculia https://www.understood.org/en/articles/what-is-dyscalculia

https://study.com/academy/lesson/dysgraphia-math-difficulties-accommodations.html

It does not stop people living their own.

life or learning with the right support, but on

the positive side they can be creative,

 different people in different ways.

However,’ it is important to accept.

 anything from anyone because there

In my case this is because, which.

My Mum noticed a lump when.

I was saying four seven years of age,

little did we know it was a lump.

because it was only the size of a pea.

 Mum notified me because.

I felt nothing there to bother me at all.

My Mum

took me to the GP at time, he/she said,

I can’t remember but anyway.

they said it is best left alone; it is probably cystic.

At the age of twenty - three I was doing work

the cook had over cooked the straw,

I was struggling to swallow and felt the

lump is getting bigger.

Ben is seven years old who was diagnosed by an Occupational Therapist. This was a written report that outlined Ben’s condition. He was struggling with physical skills like doing up his buttons, tying his shoelaces and more.

Dyspraxia and me.

I had been working for the University Of Wolverhampton for eleven years, lecturing students professionals on and off, such as learning disability nurses, Paramedics, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists etc.

Dyspraxia needs to be taken very seriously, it’s not an illness or disease, it is a hidden long term psychical learning difficulty. It can affect people mentally as well as physically, but the seriousness of Dyspraxia is psychically hidden more so how it may affect people mentally.

It does not stop anyone doing anything at all, but it just slows people down where it causes us to take longer than others to do things. It is not understood because people with Dyspraxia can walk and talk but it may not be the case for everyone who faces a learning difficulty and condition.

However,’ it is important to accept anything from anyone, it can vary from person to person.

I have lived with Dyspraxia for fifty four years since birth. To start with, it was unaware, but research grew as the years went on. https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/blog/2018/10/08/dyspraxia-strategies-that-can-help

I was born very quickly, though lack of oxygen to the brain. I was hyperactive and I had Epilepsy as a child, it came back when I was thirty one and stopped when I was forty three. I have always had family support.

It is very important for a person to be assessed and diagnosed as young as possible in order in hopes of getting the right support, but it may be different for different people.

Psychical difficulty.

Difficulty doing up zips, shoelaces, looking after babies, children, getting dressed etc. for example. This may cause people a lot of anxiety and frustration.

What is Dyspraxia? Dyspraxia (Developmental Co - ordained disorder) (DCD)

Dyspraxia is a developmental co-ordination disorder which affects movement but not intelligence. However,’ the condition may slow people down.

dyspraxia is a hidden psychical and mental learning difficulty, which affect balance, coordination, grip but affects reading, writing comprehension, math’s like Dyslexia but Dyspraxia also affects people’s physically, such skills as sport, learning to drive and more.

It can affect reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension, math in similar ways to Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia.

Cause.

If the person was born 37 weeks into the pregnancy, prematurely.

Low weight birth, lack of oxygen to the brain, brain, injury, trauma.

It is unclear whether Dyspraxia is family related.

If the Mother was talking drugs or drinking alcohol.

Treatment for (DCD) Pyrotherapy.  https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/developmental-coordination-disorder-dyspraxia-in-adults/

Types of Dyspraxia

Going by research I read on the types of Dyspraxia. I have faced most of the difficulties in most of the types of Dyspraxia such as motor Dyspraxia jumping, skipping, running, and dressing. verbal Dyspraxia speech difficulties, Oral dyspraxia, problems with mouth, throat, tongue, saliva, sallow Ing etc.

Some these skills I have overcome such as difficulties with holding my knife and folk, cutting up food etc.

Throughout my life I have had my strengths and weaknesses in reading and writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation etc. but I have always been weak at math.

There are three types of Dyspraxia in people all ages,

but I think it is possible to all three.

I am not an attention seeker but truthfully

I face difficulties from all three or have done.

I believe for example; that Dyspraxia does not

It just affects the outside body but the inside too,

as I have faced movement difficulties my throat,

tongue, as well as mouth and lips to speak where

some I have overcome but then my cancer Operation

did a bit of damage to the inside of my throat even

though they took the lump out My speech has gone

through good and bad days. It is hard to say what

caused the lump as my Mum noticed it,

when I was a small child, but doctors

did not know what it was until I was twenty – three.

Motor skills As for outside difficulties

I can throw a ball does not catch a ball,

poor picking up objects, poor gripping,

poor handwriting skills, poor English, poor math’s skills,

spelling etc., which is like Dyslexia on the education and writing side.

It also has such physical difficulties and poor rhythm,

poor body awareness, bumping into things, people etc.

Dyspraxia used to be known as clumsy syndrome.

Physiotherapy is needed for muscle difficulty.

Verbal Dyspraxia is difficult in speech pronouncing words,

not necessarily all words where people get good

and bad days according to my research,

which may vary from person to person.

Oral Dyspraxia, like Verbal Dyspraxia,

is a speech difficulty, but Oral Dyspraxia

affects the mouth, tongue, and lips.

I think with both those types of

Dyspraxia, speech and language therapy needs to be involved.

Introduction to Dyslexia.

When most people talk about Dyslexia, they think people with Dyslexia

cannot read and write, that is not the case.

We just have difficulties along the way, which may be for letters the

wrong way round for e.g.; bad, dad, same with say numbers 23, 32.

Some may get left and right mixed up.

Get confused with bs and ds for example; even psychologists and qs.

Miss words out of sentences, missing information etc.

Struggle to understand what they have read.

When they read small print may feel to them as

if words are jumping off the page screen etc.

They may not remember what they read or and they may have only

remembered some of what they have read, not all, the same with listening too.

 These days with so much IT most people watch a lot of videos etc.;

wouldn’t it be interesting to know how much one can take from

watching a video or tv compared to listening to someone

directly talking to you face to face?

How much can you pick up?

Some people’s” concentration gets affected easily, like mine,

such noises from IT devices, door knocks, a lot

of people talking etc., not that I am complaining as

these things must happen at times but this how

certain learning difficulties etc. affect people.

For most people it can be a struggle for them to

read a whole book and that is one of my problems too.

Although I read just a few whole books I forgotten

which ones I read and what they were about.

Sometimes I tend to review books written when

I am reading and researching. Even those

who can’t read and write have knowledge,

tell stories etc.  Never judge a book by its cover.

Like Dyspraxia, Dyslexia has positives such as being creative

and talented in different ways, maybe in other areas too.

 https://exceptionalindividuals.com/jobs-for-dyslexics/

What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia can slow people’s ability down to learn

and work but it does not prevent them from achieving most of them

just may take that bit longer to achieve. Different people with dyslexia faces

different problems so different dyslexia people need different kinds of support.

Here is a website that shows the contacts to support Dyslexic people WWW.niace.org.uk .

There are a lot of creative people who are dyslexic, so dyslexic is not all a negative learning disability.

Most Dyslexic are creative are famous; such as Harry Anderson, Orlando Bloom, Harry Belafonte,

Charley Boor man, Jim Carrey, Danny Glover, Whoop Goldberg, Susan Hampshire, Jay Leno,

Christopher Lowell and many more

http://www.dyslexia.com/famous.htm.

Although I am Dyslexic myself I am not famous, but I do have my poems on my website sararevealed.blogspot.com/

and I’m quite good at art too.

Dyslexia does not mean you cannot read and write but you may have difficulties along the way like seeing written

words, letters, sentences and numbers the wrong way round meaning reverse.

When writing and reading you may miss things out,

which causes concern for those who teach you, your exams and more but there is help there.

It does not make me a bright person, it does not make a person think etc.

In fact, people with Dyslexia and other problems have strengths and talents too.

You are not alone; many other people face if not the same but similar problems.

It does not make me better than anyone, but I was born in a time there was very little help about,

but I was not alone. I thought I was, and I was wrong. I do not want

the same for you. Despite that in childhood, I achieved very little

if not at all but when I left school and went to college caught up

with most of what could not cope with as a school child.

People with Dyslexia may have difficulty with decoding, maybe problems creating a password, phonics, sounding words and more.

We may get confused with words that sound the same, similar, spelled differently to one another.

We may have difficulty in comprehension, taking in information, remembering instructions, directions and more.

We need one to one support in studying and extra time in exams.

The affects of Dyslexia. Too much to think about at once can cause things to be

missed or too much done and said to what there should be. A lot to do in such little time can

be too much for most Dyslexia people, which for most can link into Anxiety. Dyslexic really is more of an

education problem more than a health problem but everyone likes to get into life as far as a career is curtained.

People with dyslexic tend to need one to one support during studying for exams and that. As the levels get

higher in qualifications, people with Dyslexia tend to find our work becoming harder; therefore

many Dyslexic people may suffer from Anxiety when it comes to stress many with exams.

http://www.mind.org.uk/ which can cause some people Panic Disorder.

For most people the right information can be put in the wrong place when most Dyslexic people are trying to fill in forms.

Dyslexia Awareness.

What is Dyslexia?

•        Dyslexia can slow people’s ability down!

•        Dyslexic people can face problems with basic skills like reading, writing, spelling and math’s.

•         Different people can face different problems in different ways.

•        Dyslexia doesn't make people unable to learn or do anything.

•        People with Dyslexia just need the right support.

•        There are lots of creative and famous people who are Dyslexic.

    Effects of Dyslexia.

•        Too much to think about all at once can cause either information to be missed out or too much done.

•        Things can be the wrong way round but the right information.

•        A lot to be done in such little time can be too much.

•        Is there anyone who has Dyslexia who would like to talk about it?

Has anyone got any questions?

Children in Pre or Infants schools may struggle with learning the alphabet.

They may know how to read write and remember the letters.

Although some may not but they may not be able to remember

them in the right order of the alphabet. I think I had the same problem

as a child but back then it seemed as I was thought of as think, squib etc.

Kindergarten and first grade, they may struggle to read loud and in public.

They may struggle with reading, sound, pronouncing, and spell certain words.

I struggled for years

With that where the teachers used to get me try to say them in so many symbols,

which sometimes helped and other times did not.

They may not recognize central words.

This may not change much during second grade or high school,

where they may feel embarrassed reading in public.

This may cause them a lot of Anxiety and fear when a lot of people are looking at them.

Even though most people may understand they may have Dyslexia, they may still feel overwhelmed.

However,’ this may vary for most people depending on their self – esteem and many more things.

I hated talking part in school plays etc., I was shy as a child when it came to that,

when I was in school and yet many years later

I enjoyed doing lectures for the students at the University.

Therefore’ it is possible to overcome most things but not everyone necessary changes I guess.

Dyslexia may slow people down where they may need a lot of support school,

college and university work with studying, extra time for exams, assignments, essays and more.

Anyone can struggle with anything at any age though school, college or university, even all.

Even speaking, sounds, blending sounds, recognizing sounds or and words etc.

Most people may struggle to make notice say in a class, meeting etc.,

They may not pick up everything to whoever is holding the class, meeting etc.,

mainly when there is a big group of people talking and more.

If they are likely to miss out important things,

they need support from someone who can

pick what they really need to know, whatever it may be.

This may cause them a lot of Anxiety.

Learning disability and mental health lecturing

To be honest I have been struggling to know what to call this post. First all I want to thank everyone for reading this blog and your patients. Due to my  disabilities and other problems, I know I struggle to make myself understood and sorry if most things do not make sense in what I say.

One thing I know is that I am not alone with facing disabilities and other problems. I have been writing this blog for nearly eighteen years now. I have not been working or studying for at least ten years may be less or more now. No matter what this blog has helped me to try to explain to you what it like to have disabilities and other problems and thank you so much for your support. I will go on writing this blog as long as I live now and I am not as young as I was when I first started this blog, 37 nearly 38 years old when I first set up this blog would you believe? Now I am fifty - five to fifty - six, sadly none of us are getting any younger are we but it is not all negative.

As you may have read in my 2023 post, that I was starting to write a  texts book on disability and mental health lecturing, which is an achievement but not an easy journey for anyone but without wanting sympathy is more harder when your special needs, due to needing support with spelling, grammar, publishers and more. I understand may be not possible from anyone or maybe everyone, which do not expect. If at all possible I would grateful for some feedback, advice and more on how I can write my book, how I put it out there and more. It is a Learning Disability And Mental Health Awareness text book based on my work I did for the University, most is what is on this website, and what I faced with my own disabilities, mental health etc.

I am also writing a learning disability and mental health awareness newsletter. Please feel free to email me on sarajgorman@gmail.com, if you can tell me anything, thank you.

Leadership skills

You are a leader, not a boss, no one should be a boss or citizen. No one should tell anyone what to do.

It is fine for a leader to give advice.

Suggesting ideas to support Volunteers.

 What are core skills?

Core skills are everyday skills we may use without realizing they are core skills, but all have different strengths and weaknesses. No one knows everything but some have more to learn than others. Such as thinking, writing, reading, education, IT, Internet, research, creating, learning, and more.

Rapport building. Build up a supporting relationship between Mentor and Mentee.

Setting direction, and agreement between Mentor and Mentee.

Progress, research, refer, references, and more. Help the Mentee set goals, for e.g., supporting the Mentee in learning new skills they want to learn or further supporting them in finding volunteer training or courses related to what they may be learning.

Winding down, preparing to end the Mentor and Mentee relationship on positive notice by giving the mentee something to look forward to what they enjoy.

Moving on. Still being there for the Mentee, if they need you. For e.g.; it should be the Mentee’s right to report to you if they face problems with people in any workplace, college, university, etc. you may have placed them in. Be there for further support if needs be. Skills, Qualifications, and more Volunteers and even what we need to try and help volunteers. Education, special education, and more.

Active listening skills, let the Mentee do most of the talking.

Go along with what the Mentee wants.

What are their goals?

Where are they now?

How, where, etc. do they want to move forward, and if so how?

What is happening now?

Is there any progress, if so what is the progress?

If not what needs to improve?

Research, for example: If someone wants to volunteer to work with animals, how do we need to help make this happen for them? For example, volunteer work placements, courses, etc.

Short or, and long-term goals may be involved.

Think about how we can research besides the internet.

How we find volunteers.

Where needs volunteers.

For eg; advertise shops, cafes and more if we can design posters to put up.

Skills for us to learn.

Leadership skills.

Active listening skills.

Teamwork.

Problem solving.

Research skills.

Learning to help Volunteers/ mentees set goals.

Coaching, Advocacy, Counselling, and learning disability and mental health awareness skills.

Internet and IT skills.

Coping skills.

Core skills

Comprehension/ remembering
Understanding
Teamwork
Math skills
Decision making, coming up with ideas.
Core skills can be used for creating resumes / CVs etc.
Health and safety skills.
For eg; Data protection, laws and more.
Employment training services.
