Learning disability and mental health awareness training

When having a disability and mental health problems it is easy to be misunderstood by others who don't face them. This website was created by my Mum, sister, and me back in August 2007 to try and help people understand me and others the same if not similar to me.

This website was designed for those who face disabilities and mental health problems and those who work or and study in the learning disability and mental health field, including parents, families, carers, etc. Such as nurses, doctors, teachers, employers, carers, support workers, social workers, etc.

Since January 2015, I have been a visiting Lecture of Learning Disability and Mental health for the Success group and Learning Disability team at the University Of Wolverhampton. During Covid 19 lockdown, in September 2021, I also started Volunteer work from home for Beacon Befriending telephone service, as a trainee counselor.

Back in 2009, I was supported by Mencap and disabled employees to set up my own enterprise, which I shared with another person with a disability due to funding problems sadly and Mencap slowly fonding it only lasted twelve months. At that time, we only did four sessions. We were called, " ACCESS ALL AREAS NOW" However all wasn't lost although it was as if I have created my Disabled Facebook groups on what was my business idea, which is ACCESS ALL AREAS NOW, DISABILITY AND MENTAL HEALTH TALK and SUPPORT FOR DISABILITY AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

Disability and Mental health awareness.

“ How does mental illness affect disability?”

Over the last ten years and more, we have seen a huge increase in mental health in disability, when it comes to misunderstanding over benefits, employment, etc.

As a person with disabilities and mental illnesses myself, I understand the Anxiety of being misunderstood by society. Having been on this earth nearly fifty – three years I have seen many changes in how we have been treated as disabled people etc but still not completely understood. Whether there will be a big improvement in my lifetime, I have no idea, which would be surprised to see, if not I would like to think this big change will happen when I have gone.

Getting to the point, when I was younger at Job center appointments etc,  I was misunderstood for not wanting to work when I did. This was because the types of jobs that were offered to me weren’t within my capabilities.   Like other people disabled people have strengths and weaknesses, we just may take longer to train, learn and even qulifcate in things compared to other people.  Most things we need to train, learn, and qualifiable, we cannot in everything. We cannot always get what we want and like but too much of what we can increase our mental health levels.

We understand the benefits system is there for a good reason but if there’s anything I have learned the most vulnerable people get the stress and misunderstanding for being those who we are not. If anything, we would love a proper career as much as most society but have no choice but to understand that it is not completely possible and even if it is, there is only a limit of hours and money we can do and earn, we understand why even though we don’t like it. However,’ for what and how much and what we can do, we deserve the right support in our career and to be treated as equally as possible the same as other people.

Reasons for writing this report, when David Cameron was in power, I did a few lectures on the PowerPoint on the benefit cuts and how benefits being cut, etc can affect the mental health of people with disabilities, I held these sessions for student learning disability nurses at the time, which was back when I was made Visiting Lecture Learning Disability and Mental health for the University Of Wolverhampton, which I still today, also I am a Befriender for Beacon for the Blind Befriending services, where I stand to try and support some vulnerable clients in similar if not the same situations, which increase their anxiety and depression.

Today is the first time in a while now, that I have seen reports about disabled people losing their benefits and lives, which is completely shocking even though I have read these shocking true stories so many times before, where vulnerable people worry about affording to live, eat, etc, which can be due concerns of people being and or, feeling suicidal but even those who  do get through still struggling. Now we have a cost-of-living crisis, which isn’t only faced by people like us but everyone. However,’ all the same, we are limited to very little or no work, and we have no choice but to depend on benefits.   This makes me want to create a PowerPoint, and lecture on this sort of awareness again. https://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/disabled-mans-body-found-six-months-after-dwp-cut-off-his-benefits/?fbclid=IwAR1cys16W8rf2Ji-ozc5cfho4iknSQnT9lUChyR2pLGcmaKz5RmbijEfV_E https://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/dwp-hounded-disabled-woman-for-years-before-her-starvation-death-papers-show/ Although the government has promised us a £150.00 top up on our benefits, campaigners say it is not enough if that is not true how come there are still more cases like what is reported on those two links?

WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, WHAT AM I WRITING RIGHT NOW?

There is nothing like thinking, feeling, and writing in the now.  I feel ashamed to say I’ve not written since I can back from America in July this year, it’s about time I did some writing now, right now like us all I am feeling very emotional.

There has been nothing more emotional than what has happened in the last ten days and what is still going on now. Although the funeral is today and from tomorrow life moves on. As Prince Philip used to say just get on with it! That is very All the same  Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip with always on our minds. So, Queen Elizabeth said at the age of twenty–one, I will be true as your Queen, however long or short my life is in so many words, so she kept her word and promise. The world has sadly lost our mentors but if anyone deserves a life’s rest for the Dufy’s she serviced us, it is the Queen to be back with her Prince Philip her strength and stay.

Covid 19 lockdown seems like long road, and we had no idea if we were going to live our lives again, if ever when  will it happens. The Queen gave us strength, saying to us. “ We will be with our friends again, we will be with our family again, we will meet again.” She was not wrong. This was a time we could see no way forward, stuck at home, taken away from friends and family, okay for our own safety but all the same, it was a lonely world, which made us feel as if one of us was alone we weren’t alone to feel alone, even though many of us were in touch on the internet social media, etc but let’s not forget as much of us were, doesn’t mean there was anyone who didn’t have contact with anyone. This put a huge increase in mental health, my own included.

Just because so much has improved since then as lockdown rules have completely relaxed, there is less of Covid, but it hasn’t completely gone.

Let’s be thankful for tests, Vaccines, etc despite the run-up of stress, anxiety, etc,  of getting those we face, we know nothing is 100 percent but a lot more lives would have been lost without the protection, even the rules we faced took away our freedom but twice as many lives would have been in risk of being lost without the safety guides. It was an easy reaction to feel like giving up but without realizing it our strength was stronger than we thought most of us are still here but give your thoughts and sympathy to them, friends, and family for those who weren’t so lucky.

Thank you, Queen Elizabeth II, for keeping us strong, we will miss you very much, and may you rest in peace.

At the start of the lockdown, I didn’t have a telly, if only I did to hear the Queen’s words it was only my choice to start to not to, till I changed my mind at the start of this year. We must all try to remember not everyone was so lucky to survive Covid, and our hearts go out to those who knew them, family, friends etc.

Before the lockdown Crisis started, I had worked my way up and still doing so today as a listening ear etc, who face emotional problems and or wanting help with other issues too, I had been a client myself having needed and had help with issues that I try to help others come through today. By having achieved Advocacy, mentoring, counselling, and mental health awareness qualifications. Since last September 2021, I have been volunteering from  home to call Clients for Beacon Centre for Blind Befriending service.

Looking forward sure, thank you, King Charles the III will do the best he can for us as our King however long or short.

Different ways of thinking

 Complex thinking.

Focus on the problem the client is facing, their, thoughts, feelings, reaction, and even interaction, and reflect on what the client is saying.

structured thinking. What is the problem, what is happening to the client?

What could be done, why by who, when, how, what, etc.

What is the outcome? Has the idea/ solution worked? If so how, if not what next to try, why by who, when how, what, etc.

Logical thinking, study what the client is talking about what they are facing, thinking, feeling, etc. Come to their way of feeling and thinking by seeing things from their side.

Try to reason with the client from their thinking, opinion, and point of view.

Study the cause of the problem and how it affects the client. For eg, Fred has had his benefits cut, and he’s worried about how he’s going to pay his bills and affront to eat. The cause of the problem is benefit cuts.

How the problem affects Fred? This causes him to worry about how he’s going to live and affects his mental health, increasing his anxiety and depression the more he worries. If the problem is not sorted, it could be risks to his health due to eating very or not at all, flu, covid, etc if he cannot afford to keep warm in the winter. Concerns about how long Fred can live with this problem as time goes on.

Do we all think the same?

Parallel thinking. Parallel thinking is where everyone involved is thinking on the same wavelength, which in the case of Advocacy, counseling, mentoring, etc on one is the clients, the counselor, and the manager.

Trying to help the client or and trying to empower/encourage the client to help themselves by trying to focus on the positive and solving the problem. For eg,  suggesting, finding link’s contact details of services for Fred to try to contact or and does Fred have his own ideas. What to try and what to avoid.

Look out for dangers and difficulties of any options and make the client aware.

Creative thinking.

Give out options that may help to sort the problem, find out whether not the client is happy to go along with them or not, doe the client has ideas of their own.

Critical thinking. Understanding and empathy towards the person facing the problem.

Lateral thinking. To create new ideas if other ideas don’t work out of for the client.
