SPECIAL NEEDS, LEARNING DIFFICULTIES, DISABILITIE, AND MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS HAND AND TEXTBOOK

Bio

It is not easy being understood when you have a learning disability or even making yourself heard. I am writing this blog to show how my disability affects my day-to-day life and what help & support I need.

This blog is for those who learn and work in disability and mental health.

I have lived with Disabilities and Mental Health problems for nearly 57 years since birth.

I want to help others, help others the same or similar to me.

It is not easy being understood when you have a learning disability, and it can be hard to make yourself heard. In this book, I share how living with a learning disability affects day-to-day life and explore the support that people truly need.

This book is for those who work or study in the field of learning disabilities, as well as for parents, family, carers, individuals living with these conditions, and anyone else in their lives. Having lived with disabilities and mental health challenges since birth—for nearly 57 years—I want to use my experience to help others who are on a similar journey.

Easy read Preface

The book is essential to me.

Some people judge people with a learning disability, which is one of the reasons why I am writing it for those who want to understand learning disability and mental illness.

I have been to school, college and even worked with people with a learning disability, which is another way that is helping me write this book.

This book is about real people. People with autism, dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, and physical disabilities. It talks about how these conditions affect daily life. It shows how we can support each other.

What will you learn?

Definitions and differences between learning and physical disabilities.

Common types of learning disabilities.

Typical causes and risk factors.

How disabilities are diagnosed/assessed.

How disabilities can affect daily life (education, work, social, emotional).

Typical strengths and difficulties people with disabilities may show.

Common supports, accommodations, and interventions.

What is a learning disability?

A learning disability (LD) is a neurologically-based difficulty that affects specific mental processes involved in learning, despite average or above-average intelligence and adequate opportunity. LDs typically impair skills such as reading, writing, math, oral language, listening, reasoning, or social cognition. What is a physical disability?

A physical disability involves impairments of the body and/or motor function that limit mobility, dexterity, stamina, or physical activities. Causes include congenital conditions, illness, injury, or progressive disease. Physical disabilities may be visible or invisible (e.g., chronic pain, fatigue).

Types of learning disabilities (common categories)

Dyslexia: difficulty with accurate/fluent word reading and spelling.

Dyscalculia: difficulties with number sense, arithmetic, math reasoning.

Dysgraphia: problems with handwriting, spelling, and written expression.

Auditory processing disorder: trouble interpreting and processing sounds, especially speech.

Visual processing disorder: difficulty interpreting visual information (not vision acuity).

Nonverbal learning disability: strong verbal skills but poor visual-spatial, motor, and social skills.

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity) often co-occurs and affects attention/executive function—classified separately but relevant to learning.

What causes learning disabilities?

Multifactorial: genetic predisposition, brain development differences, prenatal/perinatal factors (e.g., prematurity, exposure to toxins), early childhood illness or brain injury, and environmental factors (e.g., severe neglect). No single cause explains all cases.

Diagnosing disabilities

Multi-step process: screening comprehensive evaluation.

Professionals involved: psychologists (school or clinical), neuropsychologists, educational diagnosticians, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physicians.

Assessment methods: standardised tests (cognitive, academic achievement), observations, developmental and medical history, interviews with parents/teachers, behaviour checklists, and functional assessments.

For physical disabilities: medical/neurological exams, imaging, functional mobility assessments, and rehab evaluations.

Diagnosis leads to individualised plans (IEP, 504 plan, rehab plan) and targeted interventions.

How disabilities affect lives

Education: learning gaps, slower progress, need for accommodations (extra time, assistive teach, specialised instruction).

Employment: may require workplace accommodations, flexible schedules, or job coaching; discrimination and barriers may occur.

Daily living: physical disabilities can affect mobility, self-care, or stamina; learning disabilities can affect managing finances, reading documents, or organisation.

Social and emotional: higher risk of low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, social misunderstandings; strengths-based support improves outcomes.

Participation: barriers may limit access to community activities without reasonable accommodations.

People’s strengths and difficulties

Common difficulties:

Processing speed, working memory, organisation, reading/writing/math tasks.

Motor coordination (for some), attention and task persistence.

Fatigue, sensory sensitivities, or mobility limitations (physical disabilities).

Common strengths:

Creativity, problem-solving, big-picture thinking, verbal skills (in some LDs).

Persistence, resilience, specialised talents (art, music, tech), strong empathy.

Practical adaptations, novel strategies, and hyperfocus on areas of interest (especially with ADHD).

Important point: strengths vary individually—support should build on strengths while addressing functional challenges.

Brief on supports and interventions

Educational: evidence-based instruction (structured literacy for dyslexia), multisensory teaching, differentiated instruction, small-group or one-to-one tutoring.

Accommodations: extra time, text-to-speech/speech-to-text, preferential seating, breaks, simplified instructions.

Therapeutic: speech-language therapy, occupational therapy (fine motor, sensory), physical therapy.

Assistive technology: screen readers, calculators, organisational apps, adaptive equipment.

Psychosocial: counselling, social skills training, peer support, family education.

Legal protections: IDEA, ADA/504 in many countries (ensure services and accommodations).

If you want, I can:

Summarise this into a one-page handout.

Provide screening questions or a checklist for teachers/parents.

Suggest evidence-based interventions for a specific disability (e.g., dyslexia). Which would you like?
