Understanding the needs and wants of people with disabilities and health problems.

The purpose of this report is that I am concerned that the government are forcing vulnerable people into situations they can’t managed without support mainly those people who have had their benefits cut. Peoples’ money has even been cut for no reason just for the government to save money.  Even those people who can do some of work even if it's not full time such as myself for example are even asked to go and find work but not given enough support to find work or and not enough support in the work placement itself. Yet if you do manage to find something they can expect to find which is just as the same stress on a person's as some who has lost their benefits. I myself are in supported employment but I wasn't getting someone before and there are plenty of others out there not much different to me who had the problems with job centres getting on to them because what they are doing in the way the government thinks isn't enough. The government people not much different to me are not trying but that's not true, they not getting enough support.

As we all know in Britain the government are trying everything they can to save money which is alright. There’s only so much that can be or should I say, there’s only so much that can be done very quickly. In the mean time so many vulnerable people are forced into situations they can't manage without support and the government don't care. At least 100% of these people want an equal life to others such as a career but it can't happen to everyone just like that, it takes a lot of thinking about because of peoples’ needs are and what their wants can be two very different things including health and safety. It may help a bit if the government create the right jobs for peoples' needs but of course that would cost money, I am so sorry it's about saving money not spending money, oh what a shame but people were in the right jobs for them then less support they will need and support costs a lot of money doesn't it?

A lot of People with disabilities and health problems like me would love a full time job but there’s not a lot of full time work out there for other people so what chance have people with disabilities and health problems got? The government are not making it easy for us to accept what we can and can't do because they don't care about what we can and can’t. Refusing to work is not what we are wanting to do but before we work it takes a lot of thinking about we can't just anywhere and we can't just do anything without support. The government don't care as far as health and safety is concerned, it's not just about health and safety but it also has to be about what people can manage and enjoy not only for the sake of people themselves but people around them and people they are helping. For example take services not being able help because of the cuts, with it happening such a lot people who access the services start to sense whether or not people working their enjoy their jobs or not.

There again everyone can do something whether we have disabilities and health problems or not. It’s possible but nine times out of ten it’s not easy to get what is right for us. It’s not easy to be accepted by others when your needs need to be supported. For example one thing I have learned since I have been working in the field of learning disabilities and health problems the less support I have needed compared to when I was placements with the Y.T.S schemes when I was in my late early twenties for example. A lot of those placements I was kicked out in about a week to due to my disabilities and health problems.
Certain disabilities and health problems affect from doing certain jobs without support for example due my Dyspraxia I wouldn't be able to do factory work mainly with machines but some areas of computer work I would be able to do with less support. I am better mentally than I physically.

How does a Learning Disability nurse’s job come into this?
Like I said when I raised awareness of the benefit cuts the patient’s life a Learning Disability nurse doesn't have responsibility for but certain things in a person’s life may affect their disabilities and health in some way for example stress, Anxiety and depression. This case is a rare case I don’t these days but say if a person with a disability has been forced into work they can't do with support and if they have some kind of accident. For example Dyspraxia can make some people like me being clumsily. You may have to put some in writing for reasons why that person can’t do whatever job without support if the Gp hasn't put it in writing.

Your patient's health, safety, needs and wants are a concern mainly in today's world where other services can't or and won't help people in the way they need and want. You may not be able to help then with what they have tried to get from services but their health, safety, needs and wants are a huge concern.

How many of us love what we do?

How many needs and wants match up the careers people with disabilities and health problems enjoy?
How many have had to get used to enjoying the jobs they don't enjoy with support just to please the government.
How many would say its job that earns me money and it keeps the government off my back?
I must admit I’m lucky mine is for both reason I love my work and it get’s government off my back, I’d relax more if it was full time and I was earning mostly myself and not depending the government all. I do think those with disabilities and health problems who are less lucky than I am.

Back in 2011 when the government cut the funding on Our Shout Group Advocacy when I was working for Mencap, I became very depressed because from May to December I was finding it hard to find work and courses, I was not getting deal of support till 2012 when I started working for One Voice, then I qualified as a private Advocacy worker in 2013.

The government have always played on people's' Anxiety and Depression for example there have been people like me who have been walking to Jobcentres for over twenty years trying to get believed we want to work. We are sick of saying that we need the right support, then they think we are not wanting to work when we do. Less support and money would be needed and spent if people were put in jobs to their strengths rather than their weakness and jobs that they enjoy too, which would be the only way they would make life not only easy for people with disabilities and health problems but for themselves too when it comes to money and time. If they thought like this they wouldn't only really have to think of health and safety.

A lot of people like myself have been sent to Job course and clubs over the years finding they have had very little or no support at all to find jobs on the computer, in the paper and etc even though strangely they have supported me more on qualifications. Also these services are only given enough funding to keep people on for so long when someone like myself who is a slow learner won't get a job very quickly without the right support. These things can play a lot on peoples' disabilities and health problems for a lot of year or and all of a person's life. We need to see that today and the future's school leavers with disabilities and health problems don't go through what people like myself have gone through since we have school.
