Types of disabilities and Mental illness

This handout is for all student professions, learning disability nurses, social workers, support, workers, carers, parents, teachers, tutors, and more.

First of all, I am going to be looking at ADHD and mental health. Most people will know already but most may not, let me say what ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD in my view is a learning disability and mental illness all in one, which can affect most parts of a person’s life. Anxiety, Depression, sleeping problems, concentration, memory, comprehension, mental health problems, emotional problems, https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd/, Personally disorder.  All medications, treatment, diet etc can increase or cure ADHD, find out search engine the cause, support, treatment, etc, which is different for different people who face ADHD.

Next is Autism and mental health

Autism is a long-life development disability, which affects peoples’ communication and understanding to the world around them. For example, going to a very busy place faces millions of people. National Autistic Society (autism.org.uk)  Autism and mental health - Mind

Autism is a way of reacting to the world around us, where we can struggle with how we get along with people mainly with people we don’t know. Socially we may work out how we may appear to people, those who may not know us may take a while to get to know us. We are all human, and not everything is down to Autism, but Autism does play a big part in what we may seem, do and or say without being aware or understanding what and how most things about us may seem to others. Search engines; For example, social interaction, social communication, social Anxiety, and Autism. This is where many people with Autism struggle to make friends, get along with people, etc.

All about disability and mental health.

Interduction. My name is Sara Jane Gorman, I am fifty – three years old. I am a Visiting Lecture of Learning disability and Mental health for the University of Wolverhampton for Thursday 29th November 2022, 1.30pm – 3.00pm for the Paramedic students.  In this handout I am going to talk about what a  learning disability is, when it happens, how it happens, types of disabilities and mental health, what causes them and how they affect lives and how they should be supported.

A learning disability is an injury, damage, accident, illness, etc, before, during, or after birth in the body or and brain. Before birth any birth can mean any time after birth whether is a day after or years after etc, it could be to do with the mother’s health as well as the baby's health, which more so than not links to mental illness too. More so frustrating for the person because they are on the whole having to ask for support more than other people.

Example

What it may be. Mental illness is such mental illnesses as Anxiety, Depression, etc, which affect the emotions of how the person feels, thinks behaves, etc even more so, whatever mental illness they may face is likely to be more sensitive to the situation than what other people maybe. Where it drives them to behave in ways others may not accept or and understand for eg, self-harm, thoughts of suicide, a lot of alcohol, a lot of drugs, etc. Reasons could be emotional reasons for example relationships, friendships, family full outs, break ups, deaths, money, housing, stress, loneliness, etc, or no reason at all. This is where a person can feel negative at any time, how it affects the person can vary to the person and why. For eg, no reason could be the mental illness it’s self-making the person feel very unhappy, angry, stressed, etc, if there is a reason may depend on what that reason is and the person themselves, etc.

Learning disabilities and difficulties can slow people in a lot if not more ways than other people. This could affect home skills, and health for eg, speaking to professionals, getting to appointments, education, employment, social lives, and more but different people in different ways, which may depend on the disabilities, mental health, and the people who you support.

People with disabilities and mental illness have strengths and weaknesses but there are most limits to what can do and how long for etc. For eg, with the benefits we are on if we are lucky to do some works there are limits to the number of hours we can work and

 the money we can earn.

Mental health is emotional well-being, how to cope with the way life treats us whether it is some from years, today or whenever it was whether it is but if the person faces too many negatives, it becomes Mental illness.

Mental illness is feelings and thoughts about life around us, which affects we also react, interact even, and the way we behave.

Mental health is emotional well-being to how we think, feel, behave, react, and interact. Mental health problem is the situation, the problem the person is facing whether it is money, the relationship breaks up, deaths of people they know, etc. For many of us, this is hard to understand even for those who go through it, believe it or not, it is even possible to feel negative for no reason at all, which really when it comes to the cause is Mental illness the person's faces, which in some cases if it's anything could be down to loneliness, doing things too much, not doing things enough, such as sleep, eating, etc or it could no reason all. Many would say snap out of it, this is not easy for everyone, and is not someone else place to tell someone to do that, this is something they work on in their own, time but ask for help if or when they choose to.  However, there is no wrong in trying to offer the person positives such as asking them what they enjoy, which may be hobbies, careers, study, favourite music, band film, etc, no matter why they may be feeling negative, may work for some not others, depending on them, the situation, etc. Only cause it may not work for them, doesn't mean you have failed, they just may find their own way of coping, etc, the best is all you do. My advice is,  what do with my clients, often, raise awareness, suggest things, etc;  but don't do anything unless they ask.

You can advise someone to do something or and not to, but you cannot them to do and don't do something. Motivation is a hard thing and yet from my experience, what professionals were saying to me, I admit it is, comment sense but most things are easy said than done, if you are the person facing the problem, therefore never tell someone to stop or start doing something, which is likely makes them stressed, do it or don't do it more. Not the case in everything but most things are hard to take on board if no one came up with it in their childhood etc.   Try to show empathy by taking an interest in finding out what the person enjoys, whether it is not only to help their mental health but to help their hobbies, education, career, etc. The idea of trying to support someone with mental illness is to try and bring positive lives, where the choices are theirs, not yours, bring in what they enjoy for them is bringing in more negative when we should be here to try and help them to see positive, what makes them happy.

They may someone may advise them to get support, could be getting in touch with a mental health charity or service, etc. Mental health - NHS (www.nhs.uk) Mental health is not an easy subject, it's always best to let a person know you are looking out for them, you hear to talk to if they want to talk, don't them to talk or some people may not want to put on other people whether they know them or, which can be very concerning, where what is bothering them could increase, etc, then no one should force them to talk either. What is concerning is for whatever reason of their own, most people struggle to open up for whatever reason, they may choose to talk to someone they know, or don't know, and it can be concerning whether or not they talk to anyone.  It is hard to know what people are thinking and feeling, even if they seem happy etc. Concerning thing is as well we never know with some people for those mainly who seem to feel okay but doesn't necessarily mean to say that they are okay, which is not easy to know when to say anything or when not to, in case we make things worse, we only know if they say but they shouldn't be forced to either.  About mental health problems | Mental Health Foundation

The answer is very unknown to know whether people can face mental illness without a learning disability. Can we face disabilities without Mental illness? Again an unknown but in my experience yes, I cannot speak for those who are the same if not similar to me. I find it causes me a lot of Anxiety to ask others for help a lot whether others' minds or not. We all need help with something at some time but when having a learning disability, even more so. However, learning disabilities do not go away but when living with learning disabilities, all of one's life, the support for some disabilities do get a bit less than what it would have been at the start of a person's life but depending on the disabilities and person, etc. Disability - Mind

My guess is that it is possible mainly when we face negative emotional issues to the point everyone does face mental illness, mainly how we are facing a money crisis, in this day and age, which has happened before but each time it does happen, it gets hard to cope with. It would be wrong to guess which is worse in the sense face mental illness with or without a learning disability, people with disabilities are likely to need more support to manage money, etc.

A learning disability can happen to anyone at any time, before, during, or after birth, affecting people physically or and mentally to the brain or and body.

How it affects people depends on the disabilities, mental illnesses, and the people who face them, which are different for different people.

We all have strengths and weaknesses like everyone else but we can take longer to learn than other people, depending on how much we struggle. We can learn new skills but there are limits to what we can learn, train, and put into a career, etc. How you support will depend on what people need support with, how much support people need etc. Either these things could be a person's strength or a person's weaknesses for example. Cooking, shopping, housework, housing, finding where to live, their health, education, their work, their social lives, and more.

Introduction to Mental health.

 Introduction to Mental health.

Mental health is part of us just like physical when things are good but if things are bad for us a lot, which gives us bad mental health, which can increase mental illness. We tend to react to life differently from how we would normally. Really, we need to take care of mental health as much as what we do with physical health but for those of us who face is easy said than done. I don’t know anything,  any more than anyone but even though it is hard, it makes sense why there can be misunderstanding between those who face mental illness and professions.

This not to try and scar anyone, sorry if it does but mental illness can be unknown. Please do not worry when I say this, it is not the person’s fault or yours, but anything is possible.  However,’ you are seriously doing an amazing job, you can only do your best and I am not just saying it.  Just that no matter what, mental illness can drain a person at any time. All the same, suggest positive coping skills, it is something for them to bear in mind even if, they don’t consider them straight away or not at all, even some people tend to find their own coping skills, where they don’t always realize that are making effect to help themselves, whereas some don’t but they shouldn’t blame you either, which I guess is easy said than done, when you come across so many people in this field, where like I said a while ago, it’s not always easy for sure to know how much with what you work with is and isn’t mental health, which we don’t always know one way or the other. When I faced counseling for the first time twenty–five years ago, I was given no coping skills whatsoever, the counselor was just listening to what my situation was to what I remember. Completely by accident, I discovered poetry, as a student, I was inspired by John Keats, which inspired me to write my own  because he was writing about similar to what I was facing at the time.

It is hard to know what was facing at the time, very negative but very strange time. I must admit, I always considered at the point in my life I had a nervous break but whether I did or not, I have to be honest when I think about it now, I am not sure. I guess this is because it was twenty years and the fact I am naturally not in the state of mind I was then.

No matter how hard I tried to not react as I did, it took ages, maybe even a number of years to snap out of it. When my ex-partner went off with someone else, at the time it just turned my world upside down, I think nothing of it now of course. I don’t think I can even explain anymore like I probably could have at the time, where now I wouldn’t give him the time of day.

The only way I can explain is at no one and nothing else mattered other than him. Everyone could see what was happening other than myself and yet he cheated but I was dam fool to be still in love with him, at that point I admit, I would have had him back if he would have changed his mind. In fact, I had him back four years later, then it last seven years till he did again, the second time though I was slightly stronger, then he tried to get me back another few years but that was it, I had enough, and the answer is no, and it still is.

However,’ it was a lot more than just a relationship break in all the time, I knew him because he never knew what he wanted and didn’t want one day to the next, to the point he  played mind games, where over the years my one counselor had said for what I had told her about him, I was facing mental abuse

Each time your patient or the client leaves the door of your workplace, no matter what you say, do, what they say to you, do, etc, you have no idea how that person is going to think, feel, etc. This doesn’t mean you are doing right or wrong, and it doesn’t mean it is any fault of yours, but mental illness can have hold of a person at any time, even if the session has turned out successful.

This could depend on the situation, and how it makes us think, feel, react or even interact.  However,’ there doesn’t need to be a reason to think, think good or bad, jolly, happy, sad, angry, etc but there also can be. Thoughts and feelings can happen when they are going to. The negative can encourage most people to behave and react as they may do, although mental illness is not necessary, the cause of everything. The hardest thing is knowing the strengths, types, etc of people’s behaviors, reactions, etc.’ No matter what take care of your own safety as well there’s.  It’s hard because it wouldn’t be right for us to judge one way or the other.

Situations could be family history, trauma, abuse, relationships, friendship, family fall outs, break ups rows etc, deaths of people we know, money problems, housing problems, money problems, stress in work, study etc. A-Z mental health - Mind

When thinking and feeling ourselves as we may do,  there are risks, we may be a safety risk to ourselves or to others.

I think possibly more so in the early years, I was facing some form of Depression, where I found, I couldn’t stand staying in the house, wanted to be out drink a lot but then sit alone just watching the world go by.  There were sure thoughts of suicide at the time, and while each day started, I never thought I was going to make the end. Couldn’t focus on anything. In those days, there was no real understanding of mental health, mainly in the workplace, colleges, etc. I did work experience for Beacon for the Blind, where I was turning up for work late, all I was doing there was filing and folding up lea fits but somehow, I got through college, now sure how to mind you.

One day, my Mother tried to wake me up to go to Beacon, she tried to open my bedroom door to find she couldn’t hand, I was right by the door I fainted so she called Beacon to let them know and said I may be back or I may not, I wasn’t for twenty – four years later to find myself doing a different role from home as a trainee counselor for the Befriending serve.

With all mental illnesses, no one is said they are right in everything but there is a difference in what experts and professions know. Professions are to learn to understand, try to help those who face mental illness through what they are facing, while those who facing mental illness are facing the mental illness. I myself, although I face Anxiety and Depression, in terms of trying to help others I am very much a beginner, but I know what is like to face Anxiety and Depression.

I am pleased to know that there are more awareness than there used to be, but we still have a long way to go, and it will always be the case because there’s always something to learn.

No one should judge how long or short someone is going to think, feel etc because nobody knows only the person themselves, it’s just a case of being there for someone when they need someone’s support. When trying find out, let them know they don’t have to answer you if they don’t want, but trying to find out how long they may think and feeling as do etc, is showing your concern. Show your concern, suggest things but don’t force them to do things or not, their choice. If they answer, that may help you to try and help them, if not let them know your there as long as they want you to be. Do not chase information out of them, let them tell you if it is going to be said. If they wish to tell you if they are getting help else where or and someone else that’s their choice to say, don’t make them tell you, let them tell you off their own bat if they are going to. However,’ major concerns always report to your manager or and someone who works with you and tell the person that you will have to tell he or she  and reasons why but don’t tell anyone else unless they say you can. Types of mental illness.

Depression

Depression is a mood disorder, which can affect different people in different ways, which in some people they cannot forces on things, or for others they don’t feel at ease unless they are doing things, but others it can change to one to the other. Depression can make you feel sad, moody, angerly etc at any time with or without a reason but not everyone who faces it, faces it the same way, it can vary from person to person.

What depression is feeling sad and empty, feeling hopeless. Loss of interest in things, feeling wanting to do things all the time in order to feel at ease with oneself, very little engry or none, feeling guilty and worthless, running oneself down a lot, feeling to want to, or and end one’s life.  It can vary how depression affects people  for eg, f No matter one’s life is mental illness is there in those us who face it, whether we are poor, well off or rich. If someone is seen with a flash car, looking under the weather. Most people think of them being ungrateful to life, you think, feel etc when it happens and no matter what is happening. It doesn’t mean you are ungrateful or not interested etc in however’ life is treating you and doesn’t mean someone is blaming someone for something etc either.

rom not focusing on things, not able to cope unless something is going on in one’s life, or and in some people, it can change from one to other.

" How would you support people with disabilities and mental illness?"

  Interduction

My name is Sara Jane Gorman I am a visiting lecturer in learning disability and mental health awareness for the Success group and Learning disability at the University Wolverhampton. My disabilities and mental health problems are Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Autism, Epilepsy, Anxiety, and Depression.https://sararevealed.blogspot.com/2022/06/the-difference-between-having.html

Learning disabilities, mental health, mental illness, and other problems affect lives more so than other people for example health, home, education, work, social lives, friendships, relationships, and more.

Firstly, pretty much most disabilities are linked to mental illness. I cannot speak for all disabilities and mental illnesses I can only speak for the disabilities and mental illnesses I face. It is important to except anything from anyone as each person you come across is likely to have different strengths and weaknesses. I know me, that with having Autism, Anxiety levels can be high, which can be easily misunderstood by others around me, not just by people at work and in education but people socially and at home as well.

In your career, you may come across a lot of people who people with disabilities and mental illnesses are in contact with such as teachers, tutors, managers, staff of people they work with, families, parents, carers, and support workers, health professionals, etc, which who you may come into contact with as well as the people themselves all or different ages, abilities, weaknesses, etc.

The idea of this lecture is to work on how can you support people with disabilities, mental health, and other problems with whatever they may be struggling with?

People with disabilities, mental illnesses, and other problems do not enjoy asking for help from others, even though everyone needs help sometimes because having disabilities, mental illnesses, or other problems affects their lives more so than different people in different ways. We can feel as if society thinks we are hard work to the world, cost too, much money, and are a burden to others,  where it is as if society tries to make us feel guilty whether we should or shouldn’t, which can drive most of us to feel as if life is not living whether or not we show that to those we connect to one way or the other.

Another example is whether should or shouldn’t most if not all of us may feel hopeless, useless cause of not being able to work, etc or work very little. However,’ may or may not be the case in everyone but don’t take it, it is not the case in anyone. It is a situation that is and isn’t aware of because, okay it is unknown whether or not people are struggling in silence, but we shouldn’t amuse we are right or wrong where most people may be afraid of the reaction of others or other reasons.

Even though we know that is not our fault and is beyond our control, we can't help that we have no choice, which is depression at the same time, a lot of us have had good and bad experiences in our lives when it comes to supporting. However, the positive thing is having the right tools and aids to help us live as independently as possible, but naturally, it is not possible to have the tools, etc with everything we need help with, which is mostly due to funding and disability benefits only pay for so much.

“Not all is possible because of the government and system but what could be possible to improve people's lives if the government and system will or and were to let it?”

“What is a learning disability, mental health, and mental illness, what is the same and different between the two? “

This question is a yes and no answer, also there is and isn’t a difference between the two? Let us start with a learning disability. A Learning disability can be caused by accidents, illnesses, etc what happened to Mother or child during pregnancy, in the child, during or after birth affects the person’s brain, body, or both. Depending on the type of learning disability, how it can affect a person’s life, can vary. Which can be for example all, a few, some, or even one of these skills’ health, at home, education, work, social lives, or more. A person with disabilities has strengths and weaknesses.  Without the right support, some may take longer to learn than others to cope with everyday life compared to those without disabilities or other problems.

However,’ this can vary on those skills may be, the person themselves, which means they may not find it easy to learn new skills but not possible with the right support, depending on their capabilities and uncap abilities etc.

To learn and understand, you need to be learning about the types of disabilities, the causes, how to support us, and what to except of us, which could be anything as each person is different, depending on what they find easy and hard, what may be impossible for them, if not how much support they need, may vary depending on what they are doing.

Mental illness is emotional well-being is more thoughts, and feelings about how we react to life around us and why we do it. Things we may face such negative issues as money problems, house problems, relationship problems, family problems, deaths of people we know, etc.

What are mental health problems? In many ways, mental health is just like physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it. Good mental health means being generally able to think, feel and react in the ways that you need and want to live your life. But if you go through a period of poor mental health, you might find the ways you're often thinking, feeling, or reacting become difficult, or even impossible, to cope with. This can feel just as bad as a physical illness, or even worse. Mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year. They range from common problems, such as depression and anxiety, to rarer problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. “I now know that if I felt there was something wrong, it's because there was, but I didn't understand mental health fully... it's a spectrum and you should feel able to decide where and when you [are] on that spectrum.”

any of a broad range of medical conditions (such as major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or panic disorder) that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause marked distress or disability and that are typically associated with a disruption in normal thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning

Difference between a learning disability and learning difficulty

What is the difference between a learning disability and a learning difficulty?”

Learning disabilities seem to get confused with Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, and ADHD, which are learning difficulties. A learning disability slows down a person to manage everyday tasks such as home skills, personal care, shopping, education, work, social lives, money, etc,  how we get on with people, to those who not only may not know but they may not know we have a learning disability, difficulty, or both.

A learning disability can cause someone to take longer to learn than other people, in many ways most people have because it is not impossible to learn and know things necessary but have difficulties along the way. However,’ in most cases there are limits to what we learn, do, etc.

With the right though, different people different ways, also in most cases depending on the person and what we are trying to do, etc, with the right support, which is sadly not the case in everything, we can have independent lives. What is a learning disability? | Mencap

Borderline Dyslexia

 Borderline Dyslexia.

What is Borderline Dyslexia? Borderline Dyslexia is when someone struggles with finding the right words to form a sentence. Someone who finds it hard to pronounce, say read, and spell certain words.   Facing problems in understanding or understanding what's being taught. Where the person can read but face difficulties along the way, like not remembering what the reading was about after they have read it. For me, it was a huge struggle through my school years but started to improve in my young adult  and never completely goes away.

However,’ not straight away, it took at least two, or three years after, once I was taken off a certain medication for Epilepsy, my learning, etc started to improve as when I was getting close or had left school. This certain Medication called Pheabaretone, slowed me down a lot but also made me very hyperactive to the point when I came off the medication, I had 0 energy, which still is today.

As a child I had no danger awareness, and no sense of direction when trying to find places, even now I can only get to a limit of places without support, couldn’t focus on school, etc but learned more out of school than in and left school with nothing to show for myself. Medications are something to look into as well as the problems themselves, where either one or both could be causing the negatives but these days there should be more areas to support them.   - Poor reading ability. Not being able to read what you read can lower your exam marks fail you etc.  It may not always help, it is understood no one can support you through exams but they should be able to through studying. As for exams in my experience large print writing and questions close to the text as possible.

  • Phonological Deficit
Difficulty decoding or assembling words based on their sounds. Note that phonemic awareness is not a reading deficit per se since it involves only sounds and not letters.
  • Speed/Naming Deficit
Slow reading; poor use of sight words. A sight word is a word that is instantly recognized by the reader; is not sounded out and requires almost no effort to understand.
